The Red Palm Weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Oliv. causes severe damage to date palm, Phoenix dactylifera and other economically important palms throughout the world.   All efforts to combat this pest with various methods of control have not yielded the desired results.  Hence, the Chair of Red Palm Weevil Research was established to conduct research so as to develop and transfer ecologically sustainable methods of control of the weevil pest in the Kingdom first and later share with other countries which are suffering the ravages of this pest.  Prof. Dr. Abdullah Abdurrahman Al Othman, President of the University has a vision to bring smile on the faces of farmers and hence established the Red Palm Weevil Research Chair, first of its kind anywhere in the world.  The dynamism of Prof. Dr. Ali Saeed Al Ghamdi, Vice President, Graduate Studies and Scientific Research has enabled the Chair to embark upon the selected research path in a short period of time.   It is the endeavor of the Chair to nurture and encourage cutting edge technology to subjugate this scourge of date palms.
