Trapping

Trapping is an important component of the RPW IPM programs. The trapping system for the insect has evolved over a period time. The trapping can be effectively used in the IPM programs of RPW.

  1. Food Traps:
Many kinds of food have been used to attract RPW as:
    • Malt extract and iso-amyl acetate,
    • Tissues of the palm stem,
    • Coconut logs treated with coconut toddy + yeast + acetic acid,
    • Sugar cane
    • Dried dates.

  2. Pheromone traps:
Pheromones are well known to play an important role in many insect management programs.

The aggregation pheromones of adult RPW are 4- methyl-5-nonanol and 4-methyl-5-nonanone.  The commercial lure contains a mixture of 4- methyl-5-nonanol and 4-methyl-5-nonanone in 9:1 ratio. Sometimes the commercial lure is added with ethyl acetate to improve the trapping efficiency.  The release rate of pheromone and the food bait added to the pheromone trap are very important factors in determining the catches of these traps.
